Charlotte Youth Choir

Frequently Asked Questions

When are rehearsals?

All choirs rehearse once weekly on Monday evenings.

Melody Choir (Grades K-1): 5-5:50 p.m.
Harmony Choir (Grades 2-3): 5-6:15 p.m.
Lyric Choir (Grades 4-6): 6-7:30 p.m.
Concert Choir (Grades 7-12): 6:30-7 p.m.

How many performances are there?

It depends on the ensemble. All of our choirs participate in a large combined concert each semester. Additionally, our choirs often have the opportunity to perform around the community. Concert Choir is our busiest ensemble, with an additional 2-4 performances each semester. Lyric, Harmony, and Melody Choirs typically have one or two community performances.

Do I have to join at the start of a semester?

No! CYC is always welcoming new singers. If your singer is interested in joining mid-school year, we invite you to come to a trial rehearsal to see if CYC would be the right fit for you!

Do I need to buy a uniform?

Singers in the Charlotte Youth Choir will need to have approved concert attire. CYC will provide matching t-shirts for informal events and matching bow ties and scarves for formal events. For formal events, we have specific guidelines for all-black concert attire that singers will need to meet, plus the CYC-provided scarf or bowtie. We will provide links to suggested affordable outfits. Singers may find their own all-black attire so long as it meets our guidelines.

How much will singers need to practice outside of rehearsals?

On occasion, singers will need to practice on their own, especially when making sure that music for a concert is all memorized. We try to make outside practice time minimal, but sometimes we will need parent support to make sure that music is ready to go.

Do I need to know how to read music before joining?

No! At CYC, we believe in teaching the “whole” singer, including equipping our choristers with the knowledge to be able to read music on their own.

Is there tuition assistance available?

Through our Sliding Scale Tuition Program, annual tuition can be adjusted according to family income. CYC and Arts+ are committed to providing and outstanding and accessible choir experience to any student wishes to join. We also provide flexible payment plans, permitting families to break up tuition over the course of the CMS school year. Returning families are encouraged to apply for aid by the spring deadline, while new singers may apply at any time.
